The Boogie Brothers with Frantz Barosy – live DJ set.
Anthony the Avatar and Shanedaddy with guest Frantz Barosy.
Ella Lounge, street level, Manhattan, New York, NY.
1:13AM – 2:25AM, April 15, 2010.
This set recorded and mastered by Kill Screen.
General programming notes:
- 4 hours, 13 minutes of audio files from the night
- source audio files recorded in 88,200 kHz sample rate / 24 bit sound
- compressed MP3 version posted
Specific mastering notes:
- four-bar, pre-vocal introduction; the initial iteration had five bars prior to the “how high” vocal hook, but I removed the would-be fifth bar because it sounds more intuitive with a four-bar introduction.
- normalization – in the “before” screen shot, notice the two steps down in levels. The night of the recording we manually lowered the levels on the digital recorder to prevent clipping (twice successively during this particular segment). It’s an imperfect process, but in order to achieve more uniform sound, I had to go back and expand portions of the sound waveform. It gets tricky because vinyl pops, though isolated, register as “high-water marks” and, in turn, make it more difficult to adjust the levels of softer passages because elements need to expand / contract proportionally. I manually excised a few such pops; in doing so, I was then less restricted in expanding segments of the waveform.
- eight-bar, geometric fade outro; not particularly innovative, but it sounds nice – count the eight bars that fade towards and then stop on the edge of the would-be ninth bar, aka the first beat of the would-be next track (see right-edge, pointy segment of the “after” screen shot).
