The midnight movie. Japanese psyche rock pressed on vinyl. The hand-stapled mini comic. Videogames have always had their outsider equivalent. But never has the shaggy and offbeat side of electronic diversion felt so vital and so mandatory. The best work seems dominated by personalities and auteurs. Jeff Minter, Edwin McMillen and Florian Himsl, and Cactus are creating works of genius nearly single-handedly. And yet the group effort, spearheaded by iconoclasts and imbued with contrarian goal, needn’t be dull and unoriginal. Big games can be weird. But man, it sure seems like big gamemakers have to try that much harder to breath even the slightest originality into their work. Bet on more of the people behind your favorite name brand games resigning, retiring and going solo. There’s never been a better time to have an eye on the underground.
