China’s game industry nears the 10 billion-dollar mark for 2012

The United States, population 315,129,543, spent about 17 billion dollars on gaming last year. China, population 1,319,175,330 (that’s four times as big) spent more than half that on videogames in 2012 (9.7 billion), according to The Next Web. That makes China, with its urban migration trends and economy growing at eight per cent a year, something of a sleeping giant when it comes to digital entertainment. It’s a lopsided sector – a full 90 percent of that 9.7 billion came from online gaming. Gaming sales are expected to hit 21 billion in China by 2017, with the major area of growth coming from mobile gaming, and potentially console games if China lifts the ban on consoles that has been in place since 2000.
