Joe Queenan didn’t really care much about games, and figured it was way too late to start. That is, until he saw a commercial for Modern Warfare 3 and found a replacement for the critically-panned blockbuster movies: critically-panned blockbuster games.
The reason is: Movies are dreck. That 60-second “Modern Warfare” promo was way more exciting than anything I’d seen in “The Green Hornet,” “Thor,” “Sucker Punch,” “Colombiana,” “Captain America” or any of the other stupid action movies I’ve seen in the past few years. In fact, a key selling point of games like “Assassin’s Creed” is that heroes look really heroic and villains look really evil. Nobody looks like Sylvester Stallone or Seth Rogen.
Queenan’s journey becomes one of discovery. Modern Warfare 3 becomes almost a gateway into unconventional games, like Dark Souls, which he watches his son play. Even I can’t object to that.
