Oral Perspectives lets you walk a day in a mouth in virtual reality

Before pursuing an MFA in design and technology at NYC’s Parsons The New School for Design, Alec McClure worked as a photographer. He’s accustomed to seeing things from a different perspective so it’s natural that the Oculus Rift would be a natural extension of that visual training.

That said, Oral Perspectives has to be one of the strangest re-imaginings of waking life. Designed for VR, a microphone and a custom jaw sensor, it “takes place from a visually, aurally and kinesthetically shifted perspective a few inches lower than the natural position, inside the user’s oral cavity.” The jaw sensor provides discomfort as you have to keep your mouth open in order to experience the world, a bit like chewing gum for an hour.

It’s well known that virtual reality can create motion sickness, but pairing that with potential jaw pain too is a heavy cross to bear. It’s not too disimilar from the Food Simulator that recently graced Ars Electronica or even before that, the beloved Painstation. McClure notes, “For those without the jaw sensor and/or the Oculus Rift headset, there are options in the menu to turn off the functionality, although this is not recommended.” Ok awesome.
