Table tennis—with its lightweight white ball bouncing rhythmically across the net—makes the transition into a rhythm game surprisingly well. All that it takes is an interactive table rigged with sensors that produces geometric patterns and plays music when the ball hits. This was proven by the young Swed David Rinman, the graphic and interactive designer behind this Vib-Ribbon-esque ping pong table. 

Although chances are you’ll never get the oppertunity to spike on it, this centerpiece for rumpus rooms of the future is more than an internet curio, making obvious how digital technology could influence and change physical sports as we know it. Already we’re seeing the impact of data on the sporting world with moneyball scenerios and augmented broadcasts. But what I’m wondering is what new sports await.
