Shadowmatic is the iPhone game that Giorgio de Chirico would have made

You may notice that the upcoming iPhone game Shadowmatic has almost a de Chirico vibe, the Italian artist known for unsettling paintings of shadowy architecture. The game is a metaphysical puzzler about rotating abstract metal sculptures until their shadows form the shape of a familiar object, such as a tea kettle, or the number 5.

A cool thing about game development on iPhone is that the device’s design sensibilities have attracted creatives from outside the arena of games, and that’s how this strange, lovely creation came to exist. Throughout their twenty year history, Triada Studio has been making surrealistic computer-animated shorts for TV spots, but this is their first game. Judging from this new trailer, it was a good call.
