1930s-style animation game Cuphead won’t arrive until 2017 now

Cuphead creator Studio MDHR was trying to get its game out exactly 80 years from 1936—the year when a Japanese cup-headed character in a short propaganda film turned into a tank to defeat a bunch of evil Mickeys. Now, however, Cuphead will be released 81 years after Cuphead’s grandpa was introduced to the world. Studio MDHR announced this week that Cuphead will be released for Xbox One, Windows 10, and Steam in mid-2017 now. And this isn’t bad news; it means Studio MDHR won’t have to cut content from the game to make a tight deadline. “It would have meant releasing with fewer bosses, less platforming levels, as well as…

Get a load of the fluid, feminine power of Gris

As of right now, there’s not a lot of information about Gris. We know it’s a 2D game. We know it has “zones.” We know it stars a woman clad in a flowing cloak reminiscent of the main character in Journey (2012). We know it takes place in a surreal environment largely dominated by a Mars-like red, and we know it’s being worked on by a team from both Barcelona and Tokyo. More than anything, though, we know it’s beautiful as all get out. We know this because what has been revealed about the game, mostly through its social media accounts on…

Right on: Cuphead’s 1930s-style animation will exist beyond boss fights

The fine folks behind Cuphead have their own E3 announcement and it’s a doozy—their 1930s-animation-inspired game will have platforming elements. That may not seem like a lot, but before now, Cuphead had been touted exclusively as a boss-rush game. One-on-one battles against large enemies that didn’t give you a break were showcased, including fights against a large pirate named Captain Silver, and an angry carrot. It did a brill job of combining the golden age of Disney with confined run-and-gun challenges. you jazzily shoot down mushrooms with finger pistols However, as said, at E3 this year, on show is a…

Cuphead programmer’s side project is inspired by Canada’s long winters

One of the people behind the upcoming Cuphead has begun work on his next game, a Canadian winter inspired open-world adventure RPG called Winternight. A game developer out of Ottawa, Tony Coculuzzi is working to create an indie RPG in the spirit of Morrowind (2002) or Ultima Underworld (1992). While the game is influenced by classic RPGs, Coculuzzi has also used his home city and state as inspiration. “I live in Canada, in the city of Ottawa, and we have long, cold, snowy winters. Winter here is often dark and dreary, and I feel like that has fueled my idea for the world I want to create for Winternight. I…

SUPERHOT shoot-dodging its way to Xbox One

Superhot is both the Matrix videogame we’ve dreamt of (naturally, whilst cradled in our biomechanical nutrient pods) and the best argument yet for the Oculus Rift. Meditative may be a stretch. Superhot is a pensive shooter. It slows you down. Like For Each Our Roads of Winter, Superhot invites you to take a moment, breath, and consider. It is not just running and gunning but doing so with the clarity of a Piet Mondrian painting. Its stark colors and minimalist architecture have certainly got us anxious to get our hands on it. Oh…and the katana. Now it’s poised to bring its time-bending gospel…
