I believe it is. You can scope it on a dry erase board at From Software’s studio at the 4:23 mark of the mini-documentary Namco Bandai released yesterday. It’s hard to make out much—some castle ruins scribbled chaotically in red and blue marker, possibly a shrine with a Japanese symbol I can’t read above it, two number 5s labeling a turret—but it’s definitely some sort of level layout. The Dark Souls series has a reputation of being big, hard, grueling games, but the raspy, warm voiceover in this new trailer for Dark Souls 2 wants to assure you that it’ll be OK. The tone is inspirational in a “these teams made it to the championship game” sort of way, and motivational in an “enlist in the army” sort of way, which is to say it goes against everything I associate with the series, which is mainly trembling for survival as the world around you degrades.
