Thomas Was Alone gets a new voice on the iPhone

If you’ve not yet played Mike Bithell’s excellent, stripped down, deconstructionist  Thomas Was Alone there has never been a better time to get started. The game is now a universal iOS app, meaning that its no longer just for iPads and will work on your iPhone 4 and iPod touch 5 and up.

Thomas Was Alone is a adventure where the player controls one of several different shapes with different abilities as they attempt to find their way to the end of the level. Narrated by Danny Wallace of Assassin’s Creed fame, the game has received numerous accolades including being selected to our Playlist.

Taking place within a computer whose AI has run amok, one of the game’s biggest draws was the use of an omniscient narrator who would guide, chide, and comment during your journey to escape to the human world. For his performance, Wallace won a 2013 BAFTA for Performer in a Game. When asked about the role of voice actors in videogames, Wallace replied, “I think there will always be a place for pure storytelling,” which was a delightfully self-serving suggestion.

In honor of it’s now universal App Store status, the game has been discounted for the weekend.
