I never thought the day would come when I’d gaze at the news of a “Resident Evil 7: Blood, Sweat, and Fears 4D VR Candle,” and wish it smelled like rotting flesh instead of blood. But here we are.
The Resident Evil 4D candle is, surprisingly, officially licensed. According to a statement provided to Eurogamer, the grossly-scented candle was whiffed by Capcom themselves, and deemed “scary enough.” “We’d even suggest that using the Blood, Sweat, and Fears 4D Candle is the definitive way to experience the game,” said Merchoid, the retailers for the blood-scented candle. “Be careful though, with an experience this horrifying, the candle might not be the only smell you notice in the room…” Also, there’s the whole ‘open flame while playing a horror game in VR’ aspect as well.
the sour aroma of “old timber and blood”
The candle, in perhaps the most missed opportunity in the world, bares the sour aroma of “old timber and blood,” rather than rotting flesh. In a game filled with zombies, decrepit architecture, and death around every corner, one would think that rotting flesh would be the first thing to come to mind. But Merchoid had other things in mind: wood and blood. So it goes.

Resident Evil 7 (a.k.a. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, or Resident Evil VII) is the long-awaited seventh-addition to the zombie-filled franchise. And the new entry is making some surprise changes—from ditching third-person for first-person, enabling a VR mode, to dialing back the action-oriented gameplay for a survival horror approach. Resident Evil 7 is both nothing like its predecessors, but also harkening back to its roots: it’s trying to be scary again by crafting an eerie new environment to get lost in, like Spencer Mansion from long ago. And now we can add smell-o-vision to the pile of new features with this candle, because what’s a game if you can’t smell the death that awaits you.
Starting sometime today, you can preorder the Resident Evil 7: Blood, Sweat, and Fears 4D VR Candle for $18.99/£14.99/€19.99 on Merchoid. It ships on January 20th.
