Prep your BFGs: Doom 3 is now playable in VR thanks to a mod

Let’s get this out of the way now: I’ve never played Doom 3, nor Doom 2, not even the well-regarded classic Doom. I did recently start 2016’s maybe-game-of-the-year DOOM, and I’m enjoying my time with it.

Phew. Okay. Onto the news at hand: thanks to a single skilled modder, Doom 3 is now on the HTC Vive.

Doom has always had a prolific and dedicated modding community. Creators have spent literal decades busily creating unique assets and mechanics of their own for the series, most notably of the original Doom. One creator already modded the first Doom for VR earlier this year, and with this news of Doom 3, it’s no longer the only one of its kind.

Doom has a prolific and dedicate modding community

The Doom 3 mod emerges from the remastered 2012 version of the game, Doom 3: BFG Edition (which houses updated graphics and a bonus chapter). Doom 3: BFG Edition was actually in works to be released bundled with the Oculus Rift, announced back during the 2012 Kickstarter. But, as hell would have it, those plans never came to fruition. The mod, originating from Codes4Fun, is one of the better VR mods I’ve seen for a game. It rids of tedious and slow teleportation—a movement akin to Fallout 4’s eventual VR mode. According to Youtuber SweViver, the mod’s 90 frames-per-second alleviates any potential motion sickness.

As SweViver adequately explains in his playthrough, “This is really special… because it’s Doom.” It’s not often that you get to play a classic longform game in VR, especially since the platform is fairly starved in the longer-than-two-hours game department. And Doom 3 won’t be alone in the VR space, as coupled with the original’s modded adaptation, 2016’s DOOM is on its way to VR hell as well. So if you’re keen to glory kill all demons that cross your path, then you’re in luck, because 2016’s DOOM will arrive for VR sometime in 2017. Just be wary of those pesky demons.

You can watch Swedish Youtuber SweViver test out Doom 3 in all its bloody glory here. If you want to see Doom 3 in VR for yourself, you can follow this Redditor’s guide here to play it for yourself.
