Modern Warfare 3’s intimate new Face Off mode is Dr. J vs. Larry Bird for the shooter set.
In an effort to keep its churning Call of Duty community sated, Activision has tossed a new scrap of meat into the lion’s den. “Face Off” mode is the central part of Modern Warfare 3‘s new DLC collection, out today, which allows joystick gladiators to grapple with one another in intimately designed one-versus-one arenas.
The mode hearkens back to the simple but intensely competitive classics like One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird and Combat, but given a High Noon cum MW3 flavor.
It’s hard to not imagine how this idea could be brought into the story mode of spectacle-based shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield. A prolonged cat and mouse confrontation like The End fight from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater could be a dramatic way to pull the increasingly predictable Call of Duty series out of its storytelling stupor.
In the meantime, players will have to manage with telling each other their own stories in Face Off.
