Episode 2 of Kill Screen video series delves into body movement & gender politics of Dance Central 3

Last week, we announced the launch of our Kill Screen show with the Creators Project, a partnership of Vice and Intel. We looked at the cinematic realism of Crysis 3 and why games are now including “crap” like lens flare to make titles look more like film.

This week, we travel to offices of Harmonix and talk to Matt Boch and Ryan Challinor, project director and programmer, respectively, for Dance Central 3. It’s a great overview of how to build new games for the Kinect and with all the latest Kinect hacking projects, it’s easy to forget that there are folks actually working with the device “the right way.”

One particular section of note at the 3:40 mark — gender. Boch goes into how they ran into fluid definitions of gender while creating Dance Central. Specifically, they needed to turn the grey area of human motion into the the 1s and 0s needed to map movements to different character animations. This raised some interesting questions about what constituted a “male” dance move vs. a “female” dance move and whether that even matters.

Take a look and let us know what you think!
