New life-like avatars could leave some models out of a job

Sure, being a supermodel might not sound like the worst job ever. In the 90’s, Linda Evangelista famously said that she wouldn’t even get out of bed for less than $10,000. But behind every glamorous photo shoot littered with buckets of money, lies the all too real possibility of a short-lived career. Oh, and heels. The heels don’t look very fun either. Well, it looks like scientists might be making those short-lived careers even shorter, thanks to recent technology out of Manchester Metropolitan University that renders “near-faultless” avatars of a model’s every strut and sultry smize.  To achieve this feat, Dr. Andrew Brownridge and Dr. Peter…

These shoes prove that in the future we will all dress like PlayStation 1 characters

United Nude has produced an experimental heeled shoe that can be 3D-printed and assembled at home by anyone aiming to look like a 1994 Yu Suzuki character. The low-poly footwear is produced in three pieces: first the blocky main portion, then a toe, then a heel portion. DIY cobblers then fit the three pieces together, as seen below. This assembly is part-necessity, given that all of the pieces are supposed to be produceable in a small home 3D printer, but United Nude utilized the juxtaposition for aesthetic effect, too: “The fact that the shoe is made out of three parts actually…

Because Vice is Vice, they put together a Candy Crush Saga addiction fashion shoot

These photos of people decked out in hip urban outfits inspired by the runaway hit mobile game Candy Crush Saga are absolutely absurd—especially this one framed by candy cane stripes and gumdrops. Holly Falconer at Vice put together this absolutely fabulous retro photo shoot, because, well, Vice. They also spoke with an addition counselor about people who call him because they’re addicted to King’s compulsive hard candy-matching game. But the important thing here is the awesome candy-themed style guide, presented in that inimitable way that only that site can nail.  Click on over if you need a break from awesome…

The swanky Atari game Kayne would play

The most upscale game of Breakout ever has been spotted at Louis Vuitton’s online shop. This is totally the way to play Atari while drinking rosé and sunbathing on yachts. The game is part of their campaign to promote their line of pricy, checkered-patterned, calfskin iPhone and iPad cases, in tandem with a cool, posh stop-motion advertisment inspired by retro games. Sure, it’s just your standard game of Breakout with all the ball-bouncing and power-ups; but it’s also Breakout played with fine leather goods standing in for the paddle and blocks, which makes it worth ten times as much. Right? Not so…

Virtual reality meets haute couture in this runway show in East London

We knew that affordable, consumer-level virtual reality would take us to places we’ve never been. We didn’t know that it would be to the front row of a swanky fashion show in London. However, that’s exactly what clothing retailer Topshop plans to do for its Autumn/Winter 2014 line, which they’re showing on February 16 to 18.  By strapping into a virtual reality headset at the flagship store, you can virtually sit at the foot of fashion models as they parade down the runway, which sounds nothing like the dizzying Hawken demo I tried. The great irony here is that virtual…
